For inspiration, nothing beats Roots by Alex Haley:
If you haven't done so already, be sure to read Alex Haley's book Roots or better yet share the experience with your children by viewing it on VHS or DVD. Haley's Pulitzer Prize-winning book is a remarkable tale of family. Oral history passed down through 7 generations gave him the clues he needed to begin his search. After 12 years of effort, Alex Haley proved the tales he had first heard as a young boy were true, and paid tribute to his ancestors by bringing the story of Kunta Kinte and his descendants to life.
Adapted for television, Roots was originally broadcast in one and two-hour segments over an eight-day period in January 1977 and was seen by 130 million viewers. The sequel Roots: The Next Generations which aired in 1979 is also available on VHS and DVD. Both can be rented from your local video store or purchased from retailers.
